Fincantieri delivers “Viking Vela” in Ancona
“Viking Vela”, the first of a new series of cruise ships that Fincantieri is building for the shipowner Viking, has been delivered today at the yard in Ancona.
The unit is placed in the small cruise ship segment. She has a gross tonnage of about 54,300 tons, is equipped with 499 cabins and is able to accommodate 998 passengers on board. “Viking Vela is the 13th ship delivered to Viking by Fincantieri Group, including the two expedition cruise vessels built by the Norwegian subsidiary Vard. Considering the ships ordered to date, and the contracts and options agreements signed in the last months whose finalization is subject to access to financing as per industry practice, the strong and long-lasting relationship between Fincantieri and Viking encompasses 26 ships.
The Viking ships are built according to the latest navigation and safety regulations, are equipped with high-efficiency engines and systems that minimize the pollution of exhaust gases and that meet the strictest environmental regulations.

Leveringsseremonien fant sted i morges ved verftet til Fincantieri i Ancona, Italia. Viking Vesta er klassifisert som et lite skip – som alle Vikings havgående skip – og har 499 lugarer med plass til 998 gjester. Skipet slutter seg til selskapets voksende flåte av prisbelønte havgående skip og vil tilbringe sin jomfrusesong med seilinger i Middelhavet og Nord-Europa.

Viking og Fincantieri kunngjorde nylig detaljer om Viking Libra, verdens første hydrogendrevne cruiseskip, som vil kunne operere med nullutslipp. Skipet er allerede under bygging ved Fincantieris verft i Ancona, og vil ha et fremdriftssystem delvis basert på flytende hydrogen og brenselceller. Levering er planlagt mot slutten av 2026. Vikings neste havskip, Viking Astrea, er også under bygging og planlegges levert i 2027 – også dette skipet med hydrogenløsninger. Viking Vesta er konstruert med tanke på fremtiden, og vil kunne ettermonteres med ny teknologi når dette blir tilgjengelig.
Viking er i rute med sine langsiktige vekstplaner og sin strategi om å være en global leder innen opplevelsesbasert reise. Basert på selskapets ordrebok forventer Viking å motta ytterligere 27 elveskip innen 2028, og 10 nye havgående- og ekspedisjonsskip innen 2031. Med disse nye skipene vil selskapet ha totalt 111 elveskip i 2028 og 23 havgående- og ekspedisjonsskip i 2031

Fincantieri: “Viking Mira” launched in Ancona
The “Viking Mira”, a new cruise ship under construction for Viking, was launched today (31.07.25) at the Ancona shipyard. The ship is scheduled to debut in spring 2026, offering itineraries in the Mediterranean and Northern Europe.
The ceremony, which marks the ship’s transition to the final outfitting phase, was attended by Gilberto Tobaldi, Director of the Ancona Shipyard, and Gastone Lazzari, New Building Site Team Manager for Viking.
With a gross tonnage of approximately 54,300 tons, “Viking Mira” will feature 499 staterooms and accommodate up to 998 passengers on board. The vessel belongs to the small cruise ship segment and is part of the Viking ocean fleet, entirely built by Fincantieri.
The long-standing relationship between the shipowner and the Group currently includes a total of 28 ships, taking into account the units already delivered, those on order, signed contracts, and recently secured option agreements.
All Viking units are built in accordance with the latest international regulations on navigation and safety and are equipped with high-efficiency engines and advanced exhaust gas treatment systems, designed to meet the most stringent environmental standards.
The Ancona shipyard confirms its position as one of the most strategic production hubs of the Group. Covering an area of 360,000 m², it boasts a production capacity of 60,000 GT, lifting systems of up to 500 tons, and hull construction capabilities of 1,200 tons per month. Since 2009, 20 vessels have already been delivered, thanks to the daily commitment of approximately 3,700 workers from various nationalities, backgrounds, and generations, united by a shared and tangible industrial goal. In line with innovation, the shipyard plays an active role in the Operations Excellence program, which entails the introduction of advanced technologies, robotics, and AI to increase efficiency and improve work quality.
