Semarak Renewable Energy Sdn Bhd (SeRenE) has signed an agreement with Singapore-based marine and offshore services provider Megamas Resources to develop subsea cable vessels.

KUALA LUMPUR: Semarak Renewable Energy Sdn Bhd (SeRenE) has signed an agreement with Singapore-based marine and offshore services provider Megamas Resources to develop subsea cable vessels.

Under this strategic partnership, a new joint venture company, Semarak MIS Sdn Bhd, will be established to focus on developing fuel-efficient vessels for the installation and maintenance of offshore renewable power cables and subsea fiber-optic telecommunications cables.

The collaboration aims to support the expanding offshore wind sector by managing inter-array and export power cables, which are crucial for connecting offshore wind farms to the electrical grid.

Additionally, it is expected to enhance regional telecommunications infrastructure, ensuring robust and efficient connectivity across Southeast Asia.

According to SeRenE, each vessel will measure approximately 120 meters in length, with a 23-meter beam and a deadweight capacity of 8,000 tonnes.

Designed in collaboration with Norway's Ulstein Design & Solutions, the vessels will incorporate cutting-edge hull technology to minimise motion and enhance operational efficiency, even in challenging sea conditions.

Operations are slated to commence by mid-2027.

The project is supported by key industry partners including Chalfouh LLC (USA), Crewstone International, and Symphonet.

SeRenE managing director Muhammad Shahil Ishak said this partnership brings together expertise in renewable energy and subsea infrastructure, accelerating offshore energy solutions and contributing to a cleaner, greener future for Southeast Asia.

"We are excited to join forces with Megamas Resources and our strategic partners," he said in a statement.

Muhammad Shahil also added that the collaboration will not only enhance regional infrastructure but also create new job opportunities, contributing significantly to Malaysia's green economy.

He noted that by aligning with global sustainability goals, the partnership is set to drive carbon reduction efforts and accelerate the adoption of clean energy across Southeast Asia.

that is interesting, I don't think Lloyd Werft has built any vessel like that before. Obviously their foray into megayachts seems to have ended for now although they still do refits.

That’s basically correct, I´ll agree with you. Anyhow - Lloydwerft built in 2014 the CEONA AMAZON a reeled pipe lay vessel, Casco subcontracted to Crist, Gdynia. Unfortunately Ceona went into liquidation prior finishing the vessel. The USD 350 MIO new build was later sold to McDermott for USD 80 Mio. Also Lloydwerft had some complex conversion projects, latest were the conversion of the UT 776 CD PSVs ISLAND CENTURION + ISLAND CAPTAIN to well stimulation vessels in 2012/13.

Of course, Lloyd Werft´s biggest reputation is still the conversion of large cruise-liners in a short time as well as finishing touches of mega yachts.

I will keep the fingers crossed that they will get the contract and hopefully show their skills.

Hi Patagonia, yes Lloyd Werft could definitely do this job. And they are now in the same group as FSG, so probably FSG would do the hull. Bit surprised that they got the deal against all the Asian competition that there is nowadays, that is all.

Last week, we signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) with the offshore service provider Megamas Resources Pte. Ltd. from Singapore for the planning and construction of versatile cable-laying vessels (1+1).
The agreement forms the basis for further negotiations on a specific construction contract.

The project is being developed in cooperation with the international investment partner Crewstone International Private Equity & Investments. The aim is to meet the increasing global demand for highly specialized offshore vessels - particularly in the field of laying and maintaining submarine cables for telecommunications and energy transmission.

We are working closely with the Norwegian company Ulstein Design & Solutions AS on the technical development and implementation of the project. Ulstein has been developing a high-performance ship type for complex cable laying tasks since the end of 2023.
The combined expertise of all partners enables customized solutions for demanding offshore applications - an important contribution to securing global infrastructure in an increasingly networked world.

Technical key data:
Length: approx. 120 meters
Width: approx. 23 meters
Load capacity: around 8,000 tons
Average speed: approx. 14 knots
Accommodation capacity: up to 70 people

We would like to thank you very much for the trust you have placed in us to date and would be delighted to add another special ship to our list of successfully built units, which would also secure our position as a strong partner in the construction of complex special ships and individual structures of the highest quality.
