Hapag-Lloyd Cruises cancels new ship naming ceremony

The naming ceremony for new Hapag-Lloyd Cruises’ expedition ship Hanseatic Nature has been cancelled.

A showcase event planned in London three days later as part of its maiden voyage has also been dropped as a result.

The 230-passenger vessel is the first in a range of new-builds for the German company.

The Tui-owned line said: “Unfortunately the handover of the Hanseatic Nature in our requested five-star standard, is likely to be delayed, bringing uncertainty to our plans.

“Regrettably, as a result, we have to cancel the naming ceremony of that had been scheduled to take place in Hamburg on April 12.

“By cancelling the time-intensive naming ceremony we are now focusing on the preparations for the maiden voyage planned to depart on the following day. Also this schedule will be challenging.

“This planning uncertainty thus also forces us to cancel the media and sales event planned for London.”

A spokesman added: “Please be assured that this was not an easy decision for us to take, as truly, we would have enjoyed showing you our new expedition ship at this occasion in London.”

Hanseatic Nature delay cancels first two cruises

Hapag-Lloyd Cruises confirmed a further delay in the delivery Hanseatic Nature, under construction at Vard in Norway. The first two cruises, including the maiden voyage, were canceled.

New date: May 5

Hanseatic Nature is now scheduled to enter service at Hamburg on May 5.

At the beginning of March Hapag-Lloyd had confirmed a slight delay, and canceled the christening event planned April 12. At that time, the company was still optimistic to that Hanseatic Nature could sail its maiden voyage, starting April 13.

Karl J. Pojer, CEO of Hapag-Lloyd Cruises, today expressed his regret that this plan could not be kept.

Free cancellation and future cruise credit
Passengers booked for Hanseatic Nature's maiden voyage had already been offered free cancellation plus a 50% credit on any future cruise until September 2021. This has now been extended to all passengers booked on the two canceled itineraries. Travel agent commissions are protected.

Hanseatic Nature is the first of three sister ships comprising the line's future expedition fleet. Hapag-Lloyd Cruises recently announced all its expedition vessels, including Bremen, are going to operate solely on marine gas oil from July 2020. MGO has a maximum sulfur content of 0.1%, significantly below the 0.5% cap to be introduced for global shipping next year.

VARD completes delivery of luxury expedition cruise vessel HANSEATIC inspiration for Hapag-Lloyd Cruises

We are pleased to announce that we have completed and delivered the second ship in a new series of luxury expedition cruise vessels for Germany’s Hapag-Lloyd Cruises. The 139 meters long, 16,000 GWT HANSEATIC inspiration follows sister ship HANSEATIC nature delivered by Vard Langsten in Norway, with a third vessel, HANSEATIC spirit, scheduled for completion in 2021. Each ship is specially tailored to allow passengers intimate and high quality experiences in remote regions, ranging from the Arctic and Antarctic to the Amazon.

HANSEATIC inspiration features seven spacious passenger decks, with 120 luxury cabins accommodating a maximum of 230 passengers. The vessel, like its sister ships, mixes quality with environmental care – boasting features including a water sports marina and spa and fitness areas, alongside energy efficient hull design and technology.

The ship marks the collaborative effort between the facilities in the global VARD and Fincantieri network, in close cooperation with the customer Hapag-Lloyd Cruises. HANSEATIC inspiration is of VARD 6 07 design, by Vard Design in Ålesund, Norway. Its 139m long and 22m wide hull was built at Vard Tulcea in Romania, before being towed to Vard Langsten in Norway in March this year for final outfitting. Several specialized companies has been involved, including the Fincantieri Group’s Marine Interiors, and VARD’s subsidiaries Vard Electro, Vard Accommodation and Vard Piping. Successfully sea trials followed in August. In the final outfitting stage in Norway, the project provided work for approximately 950 highly experienced local and international shipbuilders during its stay at the Vard Langsten yard. VARD’s shipbuilding activity is well known for its positive spin-off factors in the maritime cluster and in its local regions.

“I am delighted to deliver HANSEATIC inspiration, the second high class, expedition cruise vessel in this new HANSEATIC series from the VARD network to Hapag-Lloyd Cruises,” comments Ronny Langset, Yard Director at Vard Langsten. “It is always a pleasure to see the teamwork and interaction between all involved partners in such advanced projects; the solution-oriented and hard work of our employees, the classification society DNV GL, and all contractors and suppliers, in harmony with the excellent collaboration with the team at Hapag-Lloyd Cruises.”

“Hapag-Lloyd Cruises and the HANSEATIC series sets high standards and optimal passenger experiences. We’re convinced the inspiration, will delight generations of voyagers for many years to come” says Ronny Langset.

Speaking about the project, and the company’s specialism in expedition cruise, Mauro Leboffe, Executive Director, Cruise, VARD, adds: “This is a growth sector and VARD, with its full support from Fincantieri’s cruise experience, and through its collaborations with leading ship owners such as Hapag-Lloyd Cruises, has consolidated a position as an innovative, trusted and high quality partner within the expedition cruise industry.”

“As HANSEATIC inspiration ably demonstrates, we focus on designs that mix beauty with functionality, builds that exude quality throughout, and final delivery that are on time and according to the most demanding specifications. Together with our customers we have the expertise this sector requires, and the ambition to realize unique, safe and eventful cruises for passengers all around the world” says Mauro Leboffe.

HANSEATIC inspiration has the high ice classification for passenger ships, DNV class PC6. The vessel, which will be manned by around 175 crew members, offers 5-star service for its passengers all around the world. The ship will be named in a naming ceremony at the Port of Hamburg on 11 October 2019.
