Bore commissions three new LNG RoLos

European RoRo tonnage provider, Bore, has signed a new-building contract with Wuhu Shipyard in China for three new LNG-powered RoLo vessels.

The vessels will be built during 2020 - 2021 and will bring Bore’s operated fleet to 11 vessels. The new vessels will serve under a long-term charter agreement with UPM.

Håkan Modig, chief executive of Bore, said the agreement was a milestone. "We are pleased that Bore and UPM has agreed on designing and building three RoLo vessels for delivery in 2021 and 2022,” he said.

“Together with our customer, the vessels are designed to take our environmental thinking one step further by introducing the LNG engines into our fleet. This way of working represents our way of thinking as Your Partner in Shipping,” he added.

Bore and UPM have designed the ships for sustainable sea transportation of UPM’s paper products in Europe, combining the best features from pure RoRo (roll-on roll-off) with LoLo (lift-on lift-off) concepts.

The 120m, 7,000dwt vessels will have a speed of around 15 knots and will be ice-class Swedish/Finnish 1A. The new design meets the flexible cargo transportation requirements of forest products in different forms and will also be able to take RoRo cargo, be suitable for container transport, and be loaded with both high and heavy as well as project cargo.

Lauri Rikala, director break bulk shipping UPM Logistics, added, “This arrangement is a consistent step in UPM’s logistics strategy and will safeguard sustainable, reliable and tailor made shipping solution on long term

Fellow Spliethoff subsidiary Wijne & Barends will get four similar-looking general-cargo ships on LNG as part of the UPM charter deal. Construction probably at the same yard but I have not yet seen confirmation of that
