Built as geared multipurpose cargo vessel Sophie (IMO 9042271) with superstructure fore, brought to Poland in 2007, after unfinished conversion to seismic vessel and 11 years at various quays in Gdynia and Gdansk, Southern Explorer was towed out of Gdansk today, by tug Fox Challenger, bound for Ølen (Oelen), Norway; reportedly, according to unofficial sources, following finding buyer in Norway.
Recent ownership unclear, but recently it seemed to be "in care of" RaMCo Marine, Poland, a company probably tied to Vestland Marine Ltd. - a Polish based, Norwegian owned ship management entity.

Any hints on buyer or future function / purpose of the vessel?

Understand it changed named in June 2016 to "Polar Express" even this is not the name painted on the hull

Under tow by Fox challenger today, heading north under the Sotra bridge. Destination unknown. "southern explorer" is painted on the side with what appears to be fresh paint.
