Icon Unveils Project UFO Explorer Yacht Conversion

The Dutch shipyard Icon Yachts is building what it says is the largest-volume explorer in her size range. That explorer is the Project UFO yacht, a 230-foot (70-meter) build that will come in at 3,000 gross tons.
According to Icon, the idea for the Project UFO yacht began at the 2021 Monaco Yacht Show. There, a client was impressed with Project Master, a conversion the shipyard was undertaking with Espen Øino’s studio. The client’s goal was to convert a commercial vessel into a similar design that could be used for global family cruising and, possibly, charter.
Icon’s team identified several suitable platforms, ultimately settling on a 216-foot (66-meter) offshore rescue and support vessel (below). Of course, it would need redesigning to add luxury accommodations and a larger superstructure. Additionally, it would need locations for exterior guest spaces, along with tenders, toys, a submarine, two helipads, and a helicopter hangar. Furthermore, the platform would need a longer length, specifically 230 feet (70 meters), to create a beach club.

Today, that vessel is at the Icon yard. Already, craftspeople are dismantling interior sections that the superyacht ultimately no longer needs. Murray & Associates is handling exterior design and general arrangement, with H2 Design working on the interiors.
Upon completion, the Project UFO yacht will meet Polar code C standards for navigation in polar waters. The superyacht will have full-height windows in the guest areas, a master suite with balconies and four VIP suites that convert to six guest staterooms. two of the VIPs will have balconies, too. Run by a crew of 24, the yacht will also have a 33-foot (10-meter) outdoor pool, a 12-seat hot tub on the bridge deck, as well as a dedicated “expedition preparation room” and separate diving center. As for tenders, expect a 40-foot (12-meter) sportfish catamaran, a 40-foot (12-meter) cabin tender, a 24-foot (7-meter) landing craft, a 22-foot (6-meter) wakeboard tender, and a rescue/crew tender.
Project UFO’s diesel engines should allow a cruising speed of 10 knots, plus a top speed of 12 knots.
